Francesco BARTOLOZZI (Florence 1725 or 26 - Lisbon 1815) "The Holy Family" Original etching and engraving with some areas of lavis, signed in the plate on the bottom right "fr. Bartolozzi Scul. ”, From a subject by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino (Cento 1591 - Bologna 1666). The table is part of the collection entitled "Collection of some drawings by Barberi da Cento known as Guercino, engraved in copper and presented to the singular merit of Mr. Tommaso Jenkins painter and Academician of San Luca in an act of respect by the architect and his co-academician Gio.Battista Piranesi "published in Rome by Giovanni Generoso Salomoni in 1764. Beautiful specimen in the first state of two without numbering, printed with a magnificent ink at two colors in red and black, with a delicate lavis effect on the bottom, on laid paper with watermark "Fleur de Lys in a circle with AMGS letters and Cross on top and below the letter F" similar to Heawood 1572 and Robison 21, typical of production Roman paper of the eighteenth century, with large margins beyond the imprint of the slab, slightly burnished and with minimal defects at the edges, a paper overhang in the upper right corner but overall in excellent general condition. Very rare to find with such a refined inking that it makes it almost unique. The original drawing by Guercino which was originally in the collection of the Venetian Count Anton Maria Zanetti, as can also be seen from the literal part of the engraving, is now in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. Bibliography: Bettagno "Piranesi, Engravings, Branches, Bindings .."
